She was a singer, performer and designer and broke down barriers in the world of music. Her ethnicity was Mexican American, however she was still traditional. She introduced Tejano to mainstream culture. It was her sudden death that destroyed her reputation. This is what happens to many stars who die far too young. The result is that fans are enthused over time to dig their heels even harder working to make sure her accomplishments won't be lost in the dust. Selena's shooting death sparked emotions in the Latino community that is similar in a way to Elvis Presley, and John Lennon. A hugely popular Latino artist throughout North America, Selena's music has touched the lives of many across different cultures. Selena may have been hailed by some as the Latina Madonna, however she is still a great role model. Selena's off-stage family values and involvement with AIDS awareness programs are exemplary.
